Capistrano Community for Women

Housing:  Capistrano Community for Women is located in a quiet suburban cul-de-sac with 11 three-bedroom homes for Residential treatment and two additional homes for Sober-Living. Each house has a self-sufficient kitchen, laundry room, patio, fireplace and central air conditioner.  The houses operate in a family atmosphere, each with its own food and household budget. Clients participate in menu planning, food purchase and preparation, and household chores.

Our staff provide support services including transportation to and from professional appointments, outside counseling, parenting classes, and schools.

Treatment:  All of our programs are 12-Step based, social model programs that emphasize accountability and individual responsibility.
Clients study the 12-Step program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous and now used by Narcotics Anonymous and other groups, with special emphasis on the first four steps. Clients attend daily meetings, find 12-Step sponsors and build strong 12-step support groups. Capistrano has six fulltime CAADAC trained counselors to provide education and therapy in other substance abuse issues, such as alcohol/drug addiction education, anger management, life style changes, medical, legal and financial obligations, self esteem, relapse prevention, job preparedness, completing education requirements, refreshing job skills, reestablishing primary relationships, building family relationships, coping with child care issues (parenting) communication skills, setting boundaries, and many more related subjects. Clients are subject to random drug screening tests.

Referrals:  Capistrano regularly refers clients to such organizations as Alliance Against Family Violence, Kern Mental Health, Haven Counseling, Henrietta Weill Institute, PAR, Kern Linkage, CPS, Department of Human Services.

Children: The children residing at Capistrano live in a safe and nurturing environment, in clean and stable homes. The women and their children are taught manners, communication skills with others in the homes. Children learn to rebuild trust in their mothers, and return to regular schedules of time management, play, school, meals, and bedtime. They learn to eat nutritious meals, do homework, share toys and get along with adults and other children. They attend outside counseling as needed. They enjoy outsider activities such as Boy and Girls Scouts, skating parties, birthday parties, and other social activities at home or in school. Mothers are given opportunities to attend parenting class, parent teacher conferences, PTA, school games and special events, and volunteer a portion of the day in class-room assistance programs.

Visitation Privileges: Clients are permitted to participate with family members, sponsors and other supportive friends at family night group meeting each week.  Unstructured visits are permitted at Capistrano on Sundays from 2:00 to 4:45 p.m.  House managers and/or counselors are always available during these visits to assist and make families comfortable and to answer questions.

Primary Care Treatment:  Many clients begin their treatment in the Residential program for the first 60 days. The clients have a 10-day no contact period restriction to detour from outside distractions. After 10 days, phone privileges are between 4:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. After 60 days, the clients are permitted a 6-hour off campus pass, Upon completion of Phase I  ranging from 75 to 90 days, clients could be permitted a 30-hour off campus over-night pass weekly.

Job Search:  In the latter stage of treatment, clients are responsible to attend vocational training to assist in their job search goals and needs. They then begin searching for employment, leaving at the beginning of the day and reporting back to their counselor by 2:30 p.m.
